St. Louis (Aug. 12, 2009)
— Ken Cates, co-founder and principal of Northstar Management Company in Sunset Hills,
received the Crystal Eagle Award from the American Society for Healthcare Engineering (ASHE) of the American Hospital
Association (AHA) on Aug. 3 at the ASHE Annual Conference in Anaheim, Calif.
The Crystal Eagle award recognizes an outstanding ASHE member for excellent leadership qualities, innovation,
and overall contribution to ASHE and the field of health care facilities management.
In his 30 years of industry experience, Cates has worked on more than 1,000 projects, with a cumulative
value of more than $1.5 billion. He is a graduate of Southern Illinois University and Washington University,
and began his health care career at BJC HealthCare as construction manager. Cates served on the ASHE board
along with numerous professional committees prior to starting his own business 11 years ago, and continues to
support health care construction as an ASHE member.
"Ken is a true champion for assuring the process of constructing a health care facility is flawless from the
planning phase through project closeout," says Douglas Erickson, deputy executive director of ASHE. "His work in this
area has been exemplary and continues to save health care organizations millions of dollars by infusing an attitude that
respects all of the professionals involved in delivering a construction project, at the same time demanding the process
is followed every step of the way. I’ve never known Ken to put selfish demands over doing the right thing."
As an ASHE member, Cates has assisted in the development of educational programs for health care owners,
architects, and contractors; has chaired design and construction planning meetings for national conferences;
and has given countless hours to enhance the process of planning, design, and construction of health care facilities.
The American Society for Healthcare Engineering (ASHE) is one of the personal membership groups of the American
Hospital Association (AHA). ASHE represents a diverse network of more than 9,200 members dedicated to optimizing the
health care physical environment. For information on ASHE, visit www.ashe.org
